Larry’s POV on DVR

Wi-Tronix, LLC was founded in 2004, but it wasn’t until many years later that we incorporated digital video recorders in our product line. Once we did, we wished we had sooner.

Digital video recorders have solved many problems that the industry has struggled with for decades, but our work is nowhere near done. We’re actively creating new systems to respond to new unsolved problems. One example is a renewed focus on the alarming rate of accidents at grade crossings. As the second leading cause of rail-related fatalities, grade crossing accidents must be addressed. We recently received a grant from the Federal Railroad Administration through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to research ways new technologies of artificial intelligence (AI) and video analytics can solve this long-standing problem.

Our research project will use forward-facing cameras, which already exist on most locomotives, to inspect the grade crossing equipment as the locomotives pass by in addition to periodic manual inspections. With technology, we hope to make grade crossing equipment inspection faster and safer, benefitting the railroads and everyone driving down the roads.

We’re excited to continue working to solve this issue and look forward to making rail safe for all workers.
